Wilt Chamberlain rookie uniform expected to set record at SCP Auctions
NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain was so dominant in his 1959-60 rookie season that he captured both the league MVP and Rookie of the Year awards.
The 7-1 center averaged a record 37.6 points and 27 rebounds per game and broke eight NBA records during his rookie season with the Philadelphia Warriors. “Wilt the Stilt” was so dominant the NBA named the annual Rookie of the Year Award after him last year.
The uniform Chamberlain wore throughout his 1959-60 rookie season is up for bid in a special single-lot spotlight auction at SCP Auctions. Bidding ends on June 17.
The uniform has an estimated value of more than $2 million and SCP believes it could set a record for game-worn memorabilia.
WILT'S 52-POINT GAME
Chamberlain wore the uniform for home regular-season and playoff games in 1959-60. The uniform was sourced directly from Chamberlain in the mid-1970s and the jersey has been photo-matched to a color photo from Jan. 5, 1960 showing the young star exiting the court at Madison Square Garden after scoring 52 points in a victory over the Minneapolis Lakers. It has been authenticated by MeiGray, Sports Investors Authentication and MEARS.
Game-worn jerseys from NBA legends have set several records in recent months, with Michael Jordan’s jersey from Game 1 of the 1998 NBA Finals selling for a record $10.1 million in September 2022. A Kobe Bryant jersey from his 2007-08 MVP season sold for $5.8 million in February, while Jordan’s 1992 Olympic Dream Team jersey sold for more than $3 million recently
SCP’s experts expect the Chamberlain uniform to set another record as the highest-selling vintage game-worn basketball memorabilia.
