Kobe Bryant jersey sells for record $5.8 million at Sotheby’s
A Kobe Bryant jersey worn by the Lakers star during his 2007-08 MVP season sold for a record $5.8 million Thursday at Sotheby’s.
It was the highest-selling piece of memorabilia from the late NBA star and comes just two weeks after Sotheby’s sold a LeBron James jersey from the 2013 NBA Finals for $3.68 million, a record for LeBron jerseys.
The Kobe jersey is now the second highest-selling NBA jersey of all time and the third highest-selling piece of game-worn memorabilia, trailing Michael Jordan’s $10.1 million 1998 NBA Finals jersey and Diego Maradona’s $9.2 million 1986 World Cup jersey. All three public sales were made by Sotheby’s. (Muhammad Ali’s 1974 WBC Heavyweight Championship belt sold for $6.18 million last year.)
According to Sotheby’s, Bryant wore the jersey in 25 games during the 2007-08 NBA season. The previous record for Kobe memorabilia was a signed, game-worn jersey from his 1996-97 rookie season, which sold for $3.7 million in 2021.
