Record-setting $4.6 million Luka Doncic card up for bid in public auction at PWCC
NBA superstar Luka Doncic is off to an incredible start to his fifth NBA season, averaging 36 points, 8.8 rebounds and 8.6 assists through eight games to become the early leader for league MVP.
Doncic has also been near the top of the sports card market throughout his NBA career. His 2018 National Treasures Logoman Rookie Patch Auto 1/1 card sold for an astounding $4.6 million in a private sale in March 2021, becoming the highest-selling basketball card of all time.
Though it was soon eclipsed by a LeBron James 1/1 Rookie Patch Auto card, which sold for $5.2 million, the card is still the second highest-selling basketball card and the sixth highest-selling trading card of all time.
Now the card is coming to a public auction for the first time in the November Premier Auction at PWCC Marketplace. Graded BGS 9, the Luka card highlights the 420-lot sports auction, which runs Nov. 3-17.
The card already has an early bid of $1.8 million. To date, no Doncic card has sold for more than $1 million in a public sale.
“This auction will be the very first time we see the value for the world's premier Luka Doncic card set by the open market,” said Jesse Craig, vice president of sales at PWCC. “A Luka card has never sold on a public platform for seven figures or more. It is his premier card making its public debut while he is playing extremely well. It's a very exciting moment.”
A LeBron James Triple Logoman card, featuring patches from jerseys of the three different teams James has played for, sold for $2.4 million in June.
Craig believes the Doncic card will eclipse that mark and could break the record for a basketball card.
“There is expert consensus that the National Treasures 1-of-1 Logoman for a rookie prospect is their best asset available in the ultra-modern card market,” Craig said. “This would be the premier card for any player. The fact that it is Luka means it is in extremely high demand.”
