1984 Michael Jordan Type 1 Original Photo headlines photo auction at Goldin
The Michael Jordan Jumpman image is one of the most famous logos in the history of sports and sports marketing.
A 1984 Type 1 Original Photo captured immediately after the iconic “Skyline” image used for the world-famous Jumpman logo is up for bid in Goldin’s 2026 Photography Auction. The image, captured by Nike photographer Chuck Kuhn, features Jordan wearing the same outfit and sweatband with the same basket and basketball.

The auction, which runs from March 13 through April 4, features 100 valuable photographs spanning sports, pop culture and history.
Additional highlights include a 1913-15 Ty Cobb Type I Photo widely regarded as one of the finest surviving portraits of the Hall of Fame outfielder.
Also featured is a 1916 Type I Photo of Babe Ruth at Fenway Park during his second season as a young pitcher for the Boston Red Sox.
Other iconic sports photos in the auction include:
• A 1950 Mickey Mantle Type I Original Photograph of Mickey Mantle’s first appearance in a New York Yankees uniform. The image predates Mantle’s earliest rookie collectibles, including his 1951 Bowman and 1952 Topps cards.
• 1971 Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier promotional Type I photo taken by Madison Square Garden photographer George Kalinsky for the famed “Fight of the Century.”
• 1987 Mike Tyson Ring Magazine “Fighter of the Year” cover photograph showing Tyson wearing the heavyweight championship belt.
• 1996 Kobe Bryant Type I photo taken by photographer Rusty Kennedy during Bryant’s time at Lower Merion High School. The image later served as the photograph for Bryant’s 1996 Score Board pre-rookie card.
• Additional rare sports images include original photos of Wayne Gretzky, Jesse Owens and Tiger Woods.
Historically significant photos include a rare 1937 Type 1 photo of the Hindenburg disaster and a July 20, 1969 Apollo 11 Type I photog taken by Neil Armstrong showing Buzz Aldrin on the lunar surface.
Top pop culture photos include: a May 19, 1962 Type I photo of Marilyn Monroe captured moments before her famous “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” performance for John F. Kennedy at Madison Square Garden; a 1968 Elvis Presley photo used for his only career-contemporary Rolling Stone cover; and a 1920s Harry Houdini promotional photo from the magician’s personal collection.
