Rare Wayne Gretzky Rookie Auto card surging during NFL Stanley Cup Playoffs

The 1979 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky Rookie is one of the most coveted NHL cards in hockey. A rare autographed example is surging in the May auction at Fanatics Collect.

With the Stanley Cup Playoffs skating toward a dramatic conclusion, the name of one NHL legend is always top of mind.

Wayne Gretzky, the greatest player in NHL history, is adding his wisdom and experience to the playoffs as a studio analysists for TNT.

Meanwhile, cards and collectibles of “The Great One” continue to hold strong value on the sports collectibles market.

A 1979 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky Rookie card, graded PSA 9 with a 10 Auto, is surging in the May Premier Auction at Fanatics Collect. Widely considered one of the most iconic hockey cards ever produced, the Gretzky gem has a current bid of $264,000.

The rare autographed card is a Pop 1. PSA has graded only 95 grade-9 1979 O-Pee-Chee Gretzky cards, but this is the only signed card and it has never been sold publicly, according to PSA. Only two PSA 10 examples have been graded.

Other top cards in the auction include the #1/1 2025 Topps Chrome Josh Allen Gold Shield Auto card. One of the most coveted chase cards from 2025 Topps Chrome Football, the redemption for the card was pulled by a grandmother at Hot Corner Sports Cards in Mesa, Ariz.
