It doesn’t take a high grade or a condition gem for a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card to attract a six-figure price.

The iconic card, even in lower grades, attracts big dollars. Like the PSA VG 3 example that sold for $240,000 in the Winter Auction at Huggins & Scott Auctions. The sale was a record for a ’52 Mantle in a PSA 3 grade, shattering the previous mark by nearly $80,000.

Other key sales included a 1911 T205 Gold Border Christy Mathewson “Cycle 1 Loss” Variation (PSA VG 3) for $24,000, and a 1946-47 Ted Williams Boston Red Sox game-used bat graded (GU 8 by PSA/DNA) for $23,400.

The auction also included five Babe Ruth-signed baseballs that finished among the top results, led by a circa 1937 single-signed ball with a full JSA LOA and a family letter of provenance that sold for $31,200. Two other Ruth single-signed balls sold for $15,600 and $11,400, respectively, while 1934 and 1933 New York Yankees team-signed baseballs with more than 20 signatures each, including Ruth and Lou Gehrig, sold for $13,800 and $11,700, respectively.

“The results across the board were very strong, and the new record price on one of the hobby’s most classic cards was very exciting to watch unfold,” said Huggins & Scott Vice President & Director of Consignments Ron Oser. “Last night’s auction results really make a statement and demonstrate how strong the appetite for cards and collectibles is right now.”
