Topps MVP Buyback Program kicks off with fun, Wild West theme
With Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge winning the 2024 MLB MVP awards, Topps is bringing back its popular Topps MVP Buyback Program, with a fun, Wild West twist.
Ohtani won his third MVP award after his 50/50 campaign with the World Series champion Dodgers, while Judge collected his second MVP for the Yankees.
Collectors who pull 2024 Topps Chrome cards of Ohtani or Judge can exchange them for store credit at participating hobby shops nationwide.
Topps is celebrating the campaign with a cool Wild West video dubbed “Chrome Rush,” a modern-day treasure hunt featuring MLB legends “Big Papi” David Ortiz, “Big Hurt” Frank Thomas, Pedro Martinez, Rollie Fingers, and Vlad Guerrero Sr.
According to Topps, “Just as prospectors once searched for rare and precious metals, collectors now experience the adrenaline and strategy of discovering MVP-worthy Chrome cards, a nod to the timeless allure of the hunt.”
Created in collaboration with the BSSP advertising firm, the campaign opens “somewhere out west” and follows “Big Papi” as he pans for MVP cards like he was panning for gold. He strikes “Chrome” when he finds Topps cards of Judge and Ohtani, the two 2024 MVPs.
Ortiz then goes to Big Hurt’s Trading Post, where Thomas is hanging out with Martinez, Fingers and Guerrero Sr., and is able to score store credit by trading in his Topps Chrome gems.
The clever video includes plenty of clues for collectors: the WANTED posters at Big Hurts are for Judge and Ohtani; the “Proprietor” plate behind Big Hurt is left blank, mirroring his infamous rookie card where the name is left blank; Big Papi is wearing a Boston Red Sox Pin; and Big Hurt is wearing a 35 Pin for his jersey number.
Starting on Nov. 21, participating stores will accept 2024 Topps Chrome MVP player cards in exchange for store credit. Eligible cards, participating hobby shops and more program details can be found here.
