2024 Topps Chrome Update set with MLB Debut Patches expected to attract big dollars, high demand
If you’re a rookie card collector and looking to add young stars from the 2024 MLB season to your collection, you might want to pick up a box of 2024 Topps Chrome Update, which was released Wednesday.
The 2024 Topps Update set features the 1-of-1 MLB Debut Patch cards of the top rookies and second-year players in the game. Topps officials believe the rookie cards could bring six- to seven-figure prices on the secondary market, possibly making it the most valuable set in history.
Top rookies on the MLB Debut Patch cards include: Jackson Holliday, who is on the cover packs and box, Paul Skenes, Elly De La Cruz, Jackson Chourio, Jackson Merrill, Shota Imanaga, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Wyatt Langford, Colton Cowser, Jordan Lawlar, Evan Carter and Pete Crow-Armstrong, among others.
Prior to each player’s MLB debut, a small patch was attached to the sleeve of their jersey. After the game, the patch was taken off the jersey, autographed, and inserted into a card.
During the first of the program last year, a $150,000 bounty was placed on Yankees star Anthony Volpe’s card, offering that sum to whomever found it.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have already made a unique offer to the collector who pulls the 1/1 Paul Skenes rookie card.
Skenes' famous girlfriend, Olivia Dunne, then upped the ante even more.
The MLB Debut Patch cards in the 2024 Topps Chrome Update Series features more than 150 players, all of whom debuted from June 1, 2023 through May 24, 2024.
New insert cards in the set for the first time include: Chrome Rookie Autographs Lava Lamp, Chrome All-Etch Rookie Rush, Stratospheric Stars, 1989 Topps Baseball, Home Field Advantage Chrome, Expose, Sizzle, and Helix.
The MLB Illustrations inserts feature specialty artwork from Keith Vlahakis, while Major League Minis include miniature versions of MLB players highlighted with life-sized baseball elements.
Hobby boxes on Topps.com are $199.99, while blaster Mega Boxes are $49.99.
