Autographed Tom Brady jerseys attract six-figure bids after retirement announcement
Tom Brady’s retirement announcement on Tuesday is sure to send Brady memorabilia and trading cards soaring to new heights in the sports collectible world.
Two Brady autographed, game-used jerseys are already attracting six-figure bids at Heritage Auctions and Goldin Co.
Brady autographed items are already rare, with Heritage declaring that it’s easier for collectors to obtain a Honus Wagner or “Shoeless Joe” Jackson autograph than a signature from the seven-time Super Bowl champion.
A 2010 Brady-signed, game-used New England Patriots jersey in Heritage’s Winter Platinum Night Sports Auction is photo-matched to the Oct. 17, 2010 home game against the Baltimore Ravens. It has a current bid of $230,000 ($276,000 with Buyer’s Premium) and has an estimated value of more than $400,000.
Brady wore the jersey while rallying the Patriots from a 10-point, fourth-quarter deficit to an overtime victory — the 25th of his NFL record 46 fourth-quarter comebacks. Brady completed 27 of 44 passes in the game for 292 yards and a touchdown.
According to Heritage, few Brady game-worn and signed jerseys have appeared on the auction block over the years, with most of them coming during the first half of his career through NFL Auctions.
The 2010 jersey has been photo-matched by MeiGray to two different Associated Press images from the game based on hit marks on the front number and left shoulder. The rear number 12 includes Brady’s signature in black sharpie with the notation: “Patriots 23 Ravens 20, 10-17-10.” The jersey has been authenticated by NFL Auctions, MeiGray, Heritage, PSA/DNA and Beckett.
Goldin Co. also has a 2022 game-worn, signed and inscribed Brady jersey up for bid. The red, black and white Tampa Bay Buccaneers home jersey was worn by Brady during his 44th fourth-quarter comeback — a 17-16 victory over the New Orleans Saints on Dec. 5, 2022.
The jersey, which has a current bid of $205,000, was photo-matched by MeiGray and Sports Investors Authentication and authenticated by Beckett. Brady signed the jersey on the back and added the inscriptions “12” and “Go Bucs.”
Goldin founder and Executive Chairman Ken Goldin believes Brady memorabilia will continue to climb in value following his official retirement.
“When Tom Brady retired last year, prices and interest for his memorabilia and trading cards experienced a spike. I expect that in the short term that prices for Brady items will rise again, but given this is his second retirement, that spike will be abbreviated and lessened,” he said. “To me, game-used Tom Brady items are going to be more in demand and valuable. These are items that are personal to Tom, that tell the story of his career and of which there is a limited supply. I expect these items will go up in value immediately and continue to rise throughout the years in a similar manner to Michael Jordan as Brady has achieved that same status as the greatest of all time, or simply the 'GOAT.“
Heritage’s Winter Platinum Auction, which runs through Feb. 25-26, also features a BGS 8.5 version of Brady’s top rookie card — a 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Ticket Rookie Auto. The card has an autograph grade of 10 with only seven Beckett-graded examples graded higher.
The card has a current bid of $280,000 ($336,000 with Buyer’s Premium) with an estimated value of $800,000.
Goldin has a higher graded version of the card (BGS 9) with a current bid of $30,000.
