Roberto Clemente silver bat, Wilt Chamberlain disco suit highlight SCP auction
Roberto Clemente was one of the greatest hitters in MLB history, winning four batting titles during his illustrious 18-year career for the Pirates.
Clemente won the 1964 National League batting title with a .339 average and led the league in hits for the first time with 211. The 12-time All-Star and 1966 MVP was awarded a shiny silver bat for his second batting title.
The silver bat headlines SCP Auctions’ 2023 Summer Premier Auction, which runs through Aug. 26. The bat, which is made up of 55.6 Troy ounces of sterling silver, was originally sourced from the Clemente family. It has an estimated value of $350,000.
Another piece of amazing and unique memorabilia is the 1970s two-piece disco suit worn by NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain. The unique outfit was worn by Chamberlain in multiple photographs, including a photo shoot outside The Forum in Los Angeles. It has an estimated value of $50,000.
The auction is full of significant vintage cards, including a one-of-a-kind 1931 W517 Babe Ruth (Throwing) New York Yankees card with a PSA/DNA Mint 9 autograph.
Also vintage highlights include:
• A 1948 Bowman George Mikan rookie card (PSA NM-MT 8).
• A 1953 Topps Mickey Mantle (PSA NM-MT 8).
• A 1954 Topps Hank Aaron rookie card (PSA NM-MT 8).
Modern cards include: a 2004 SP Authentic Quadruple Signatures card signed by Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony (#11/15, BGS NM-MT+ 8.5); a 2007 Upper Deck Michael Jordan Trophy Autographs #2/6 (BGS NM+ 7.5); and a 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie card (PSA Mint 9).
The auction also includes more than 100 rare and historic PSA/DNA Type 1 original photographs, including: an early 1930’s Lou Gehrig portrait by George Burke; a 1939 Jackie Robinson UCLA Bruins football photo; and a circa 1929-32 John Wooden Purdue Boilermakers photo from his playing days.
Championship jewelry also is featured in the auction, including: a 1998 New York Yankees World Series championship ring presented to former player Clete Boyer; a 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers NBA championship ring; a 1956 New York Giants NFL World Championship player’s ring; and a 2015 Denver Broncos Super Bowl 50 ring.
