1984 Michael Jordan Type 1 photo tops Lelands’ Summer Auction
A 1984 original Type 1 photo of Michael Jordan’s NBA debut topped Lelands’ Summer Classic Auction, which Aug. 5.
The Jordan photo, which sold for $141,954, is from his NBA debut on Oct. 26, 1984 at Chicago Stadium against the Washington Bullets.
Authenticated by PSA, the photo shows Jordan dribbling up court with his tongue hanging out, which became a trademark look for the NBA superstar. The 8-by-10 black- and-white photo was taken for the Chicago Sun-Times.
The other top seller in the auction was a 1958 Alifabolaget Pele rookie card. The #635 Pele Rookie Brazil National Team card, graded PSA NM+ 7.5, sold for $168,958.
Pele’s rookie card was issued when the 17-year-old phenom led Brazil to the World Cup title. Only 120 have been graded, with only 15 earning a higher grade.
Other auction highlights include:
• A 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card (PSA EX-MT 6) for $159,312.
• A 1989 Joe Montana signed, game-worn and photo-matched 49ers jersey for $107,828.
• A 1954 Hank Aaron Major League debut ticket stub (PSA EX5) for $42,672.
• 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers World Series Championship staff ring for $36,210.
• Thurman Munson single-signed baseballs (PSA 8.5 overall) for $34,122.
• A 1788 George Washington-signed and hand-addressed free frank envelope to James Madison regarding Virginia’s ratification of the Constitution for $24,604.
