Michael Jordan’s 1998 game-worn shorts, Willie Mays’ final home run bat highlight SCP Fall auction

A game-worn Chicago Bulls jersey from Michael Jordan’s 1996-97 NBA championship season just sold for $4.7 million at Sotheby’s.

Now another piece of game-worn memorabilia from Jordan’s championship run with the Bulls has hit the market.

The 2024 Fall Premier Auction at SCP Auctions is highlighted by Jordan’s white home game-worn shorts from the 1998 NBA Finals. According to SCP, Jordan wore the shorts in all three home games of the 1998 finals, making them the final pair he ever wore as a member of the Bulls. They have been photo-matched to all three games by both MeiGray and Sports Investors Authentication and have an estimated value of more than $250,000.

The game-worn road jersey sold by Sotheby’s was worn in 17 games during Jordan’s 1996-97 championship season. They were part of the Colossal Ultimate Jordan Collection, which featured five pieces spanning Jordan’s college career at the University of North Carolina to his celebrated “Last Dance” season with the Chicago Bull and sold for a total of $8.5 million. A home Bulls jersey from the 1998 NBA playoffs sold for $840,000 at Sotheby’s.

Also highlighting the SCP Fall auction is the game-used bat from Willie Mays’ 660th and final career home run. The bat has been photo-matched by PSA/DNA and graded a perfect GU 10. The bat came from former New York Mets teammate Jim Beauchamp, who lent Mays one of his Adirondack bats on Aug. 17, 1973. Mays used Beauchamp’s borrowed bat to blast his historic 660th career home run at Shea Stadium off Cincinnati’s Don Gullett.

Other game-used bats in the auction include: a 1951 Ted Williams H&B bat graded PSA/DNA GU 10; a 1965-68 Roberto Clemente H&B bat graded PSA/DNA GU 9.5; and a 1967-68 Willie Mays H&B bat graded PSA/DNA GU 10.

Among the top vintage and modern cards in the auction include: a signed 1984-85 Star Michael Jordan rookie card (BGS NM-MT+ 8.5); a 1933 Goudey #144 Babe Ruth (PSA NM-MT 8); a 1909-11 T206 Sweet Caporal Cy Young Portrait (PSA NM-MT 8); and a 1915 Cracker Jack Ty Cobb (PSA Mint 9).

Other top game-worn memorabilia includes: two LeBron James game-worn Lakers jerseys, one photo-matched by to a triple-double against the Spurs in November 2019 and the from ring night on Dec. 22, 2020; Aaron Judge’s 2017 Opening Day jersey from his Rookie of the Year season; and a Stephen Curry jersey from his scoring champion 2020-21 season.

Championship jewelry includes: a trio of Olympic medals won by USA swimmer Steve Genter during the 1972 Munich Olympics; a 2006 Miami Heat NBA Champions player’s ring; a 2012 Baltimore Ravens Super Bowl XLVII ring; and a 2021 Los Angeles Rams Super Bowl LVI ring.

Other auction highlights include:

• a 1965 Ernie Barnes original 1-of-1 oil on canvas painting of Willie Mays (MVP Season).

• 1935 Pebble Beach Clothiers signed postcards near set (8 of 9) with Joe DiMaggio (PSA GD 2 & PSA/DNA 10 Auto).
