Johnny Unitas 1970 Super Bowl ring sells for six figures in Super Bowl Live Auction
While Patrick Mahomes stole the show with his late-game heroics in Super Bowl LVIII, two other legendary Super Bowl quarterbacks produced impressive results in the 17th annual Super Bowl Live Auction.
Produced by Hunt Auctions and National Football League Auction, the event featured more than 1,000 football-related items highlighted by memorabilia from the personal collection of Pro Football Hall of Famer Johnny Unitas.
Unitas, one of the biggest stars of the 1950s and ’60s, famously led the Baltimore Colts to the 1958 NFL Championship, which is often referred to as “The Greatest Game Ever Played.” The nationally televised game helped jumpstart the league in the 1960s, perhaps paving the wave for such greats as Tom Brady, Joe Montana, and now Mahomes.
Unitas went on to win three NFL Championships, one Super Bowl, three NFL MVP awards, and a slew of NFL passing records.
His 1970 Colts Super Bowl V championship ring topped the auction, selling for $258,500. His 14K gold 1958 championship ring also sold for $152,750.
Other top-selling Unitas memorabilia included his circa 1970s high-top cleats for $27,025; his 1979 Football Hall of Fame induction ring for $38,175; and his 1967 NFL MVP award (the Jim Thorpe Memorial Trophy) for $64,625.
Brady, who won a record seven Super Bowls, also had a big impact on the auction, with a 2014 autographed, inscribed and game-worn New England Patriots jersey selling for $258,500. Brady wore the jersey during the Sept. 7, 2014 season-opening game against the Miami Dolphins.
Other auction highlights included: a 2022 Lamar Jackson game-worn Baltimore Ravens jersey for $22,325; and a 2023
Brock Purdy San Francisco 49ers game-used jersey for $30,550.
