A Super Bowl jersey worn by Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana sold for $1.2 million Wednesday, smashing the all-time record for a football jersey sold at auction.

The red San Francisco 49ers jersey worn by Montana in Super Bowls XIX (1985) and XXIII (1989) was part of the Joe Montana Collection at Goldin Co. Items from the collection sold for more than $3.7 million.

“Joe Montana was already in rarified air with four championship rings and three Super Bowl MVPs to his name and now he owns a new record — the most expensive football jersey ever sold at auction,” Goldin founder and Executive Chairman Ken Goldin said. “With the record-breaking sale of his Super Bowl XXIII jersey, Montana has surpassed Tom Brady on top of that mountain. It's only right that the two greatest quarterbacks of all time are still trading off records, even in retirement.

“It was an honor to handle the sale of Joe's personal memorabilia collection. Congratulations to ‘The Comeback Kid!’”

Montana wore the jersey in the 1985 Super Bowl, and then again in 1989 upon the last-minute suggestion of his wife. The jersey included a Letter of Authenticity from Montana.

A white 49ers jersey Montana wore in Super Bowl XXIV in 1990 also attracted big dollars, selling for $720,000.

Other big Montana sales included: a framed uniform from his final 49ers game in 1992 for $232,800; a framed Kansas City chiefs uniform from 1994 for $92,400; and a 49ers home jersey from the 1993 NFC Championship game for $55,200.

Montana was proud to bring part of his historic memorabilia collection to auction.

“I have been fortunate to have some incredible moments in my career, but these weren’t just individual moments. They were moments celebrated with an entire fanbase of people,” Montana said through Goldin. “I have amassed a lot of memorabilia over the course of my career, and I am excited to share these parts of my collection for fans to enjoy and continue to relive the memories.”

A portion of the proceeds from the auction will go to The Four Rings Montana Family Foundation, which supports local children’s charities.
