A year ago, a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card stunned the sports collectible hobby, shattering the all-time record with a sale of $12.6 million at Heritage Auctions.

A year later, Mantle collectibles are still king, with two more pristine Mantle pieces combining to sell for more than $9 million in Heritage’s Summer Platinum Night Sport Auction.

A 1958 New York Yankees jersey worn by Mantle throughout the 1958 season sold for more than $4.6 million, while another 1952 Topps Mantle card sold for more than $4.5 million to top the auction, which totaled more than $34 million in sales.

Mantle wore the jersey on April 18, 1958 at Yankee Stadium when he was presented with the 1957 AL MVP award, his second straight MVP. Mantle wore the jersey throughout the 1958 season, and though he didn’t win a third straight MVP, he had another outstanding season, leading the league with 42 home runs, 307 total bases, 129 walks and 127 runs scored.

According to Heritage, while “any jersey worn in competition by this monumental hero of Monument Park is a treasure of extraordinary value and significance, the offered specimen ranks among the very finest of that paltry surviving population.”

The 1952 Mantle card is from the famous Al Rosen collection and graded SGC 9. The card that sold for a record $12.6 million last year was also from the Rosen collection and graded SGC 9.5.

Heritage says the SGC 9 card, which had a pre-auction estimate of $6 million, “compares favorably to any 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle that exists on the planet, inclusive of that world-record SGC 9.5 and the three Gem Mint 10 specimens in the PSA population (the only four examples on the planet to have officially graded higher).”

Another 1952 Topps Mantle, graded PSA 7, sold for $432,000, while two more Mantle cards also topped six figures: a 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle rookie card (PSA 8) for $300,000; and a 1953 Bowman Color Mantle (PSA 9) for $234,000.

Even a 1952 Topps Mantle in PSA 1 Poor condition topped six figures, with a signed copy (PSA 10 Auto) selling for $264,000.

The auction also featured another vintage classic that topped $1 million with a 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth card, graded 8.5, selling for $1,065,000. Another 1933 Goudey Ruth, graded PSA 8, went for $312,000.
