Sporting News Ruth, 1961 Set Break Lead Mile High Auction
The latest Mile High Card Co. catalog is like watching a highlight film featuring sports stars of days gone by. They are all here, from Delehanty to Gretzky – and hundreds in between.
Oh, and these sports stars – represented in cardboard form, autographs and through their game-used clothing – look as good as the day they were in their prime. In other words, the high-grade chasers will be busy during this sale, which runs from March 2-19 at www.milehighcardco.com.
Starting in the prewar era, Mile High will be presenting the following beauties:
– 1895 Mayo’s Cut Plug N300 Ed Delehanty SGC 80 EX/NM (the highest graded example on either the PSA or SGC population reports)
– 1903 Breisch Williams E107 Chief Bender SGC 30 GOOD
– 1910 Tip Top Bread Honus Wagner PSA 5 EX (the highest PSA-graded example)
– 1916 Sporting News M101-4 #151 Babe Ruth SGC 60 EX
“Though graded SGC 60 EX 5, an extraordinary accomplishment on its own, this prolific pasteboard is likely the most impressive specimen for the grade and has a stronger overall appearance than several graded even higher that have recently become available,” said Mile High’s Brian Drent regarding the Sporting News Babe Ruth card.
– 1912 T227 Series of Champions Ty Cobb PSA 6 EX/MT (highest graded example)
– 1909-12 Sweet Caporal Domino Disc complete PSA-graded set (No. 1 on PSA Set Registry)
– 1909-12 P2 Sweet Caporal high grade PSA-graded set (No. 2 on PSA Set Registry)
– 1909 Colgan’s Chips Ty Cobb PSA 8 NM/MT
– 1911 T205 Gold Border Richard Hoblitzell “No Stats” PSA 4 VG/EX
Another big draw is the No. 9 PSA Set Registry-ranked 1933 Goudey set in the sale. The iconic set is being offered as individual lots and groups in the action, with all four Babe Ruth cards (#53 PSA 7, #144 PSA 8, #149 PSA 7 and #181 PSA 8), along with the iconic #106 Lajoie (PSA 6), leading the way. Lou Gehrig’s difficult card #92, as well as examples of Dean, Hornsby, Hubbell, Grove, Dickey, Traynor, Simmons, Ott and many others are available as PSA 8 examples.
More singles sure to attract attention include a pair of high-profile postwar stars: Mickey Mantle and Hank Aaron. Mile High will offer a 1952 Topps Mantle PSA 5 and a 1954 Topps Aaron graded PSA 8.
If the Goudeys didn’t turn heads, perhaps some beauties from the 1948 Leaf set will. With about 60 cards from the set represented, all graded PSA 7 or PSA 8, collectors will dig the DiMaggio, Ruth, Wagner, Musial and Williams found among the group.
A 1961 Topps complete set that resides at No. 2 on the PSA Set Registry with an incredible 9.02 GPA will also be sold as a complete set or pieced out depending on the final bidding total.
Another Set Registry wonder is the 1955 Topps Rails and Sails complete set that ranks No. 2 current and all-time on the PSA Set Registry with a 8.412 GPA.
The lineup of singles graded PSA 9 or PSA 10 are too many to list here, covering nearly every set produced from the 1960s to the present. Add in unopened vending and cello boxes from the 1970s and ’80s, and you have a truly amazing lineup.
There will also be plenty of signed items and game-used memorabilia in the sale. Top lots include a Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig signed OAL (Heydler) ball, Roberto Clemente signed ONL (Giles) ball with seven other stars, Walter Johnson signed album page (PSA/DNA 9 Mint), 1953 2nd edition of the American Card Catalog (ACC) signed by Jefferson Burdick and a beautiful 1984-85 Wayne Gretzky Edmonton Oilers game-used jersey with team LOA and team repairs.
