Ruth, Lambeau, Paige and ‘Whizzer’ Headline Collect Auctions Sale
The best part of sports memorabilia auctions is the chance to own something from the annuals of history, and perhaps learn something along the way. The latest history lesson comes courtesy of Collect Auctions, which will be serving up some great vintage cards and an excellent lineup of signed items that will entice a broad range of collections.
Collect Auctions’ upcoming sale kicks off April 1 and will end April 11 at
www.collectauctions.com.
Collect Auctions built its foundation on a solid offering of vintage cards and that continues in this sale. Vintage singles sure to attract attention includes a 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth No. 149 PSA 4, 1940 Play Ball Ted Williams SGC 88, 1948 Leaf Babe Ruth PSA 4, 1950 Bowman Roy Campanella PSA 8.5 and 1956 Topps Willie Mays GAI 8.5.
A football card on collectors’ radars is a 1955 Topps All-American “Whizzer” White graded SGC 96.
Complete sets are another highlight in the auction, led by a 1954 Topps Baseball high-grade complete set with more than 75 of them graded. This will be joined by a similarly high-grade 1962 Topps Baseball complete set, along with other baseball offerings from 1954 Bowman, 1957 Topps, 1967 Topps, 1968 Topps and 1961 Nu-Card Scoops.
If you’re into signed sets, Collect Auctions will be serving up a 1975 Topps near set (640/660).
Unopened card product in the sale – another Collection Auctions staple – will be the following boxes: 1971 Topps Baseball Series 4 vending box, 1972 Topps Baseball Series 3 vending box, 1973 Topps Baseball Series 3 wax box, 1972 Topps Football Series 1 vending box and 1968-69 Topps Hockey vending box.
Also in the lineup is a 1959 Topps Football unopened cello pack graded GAI 9, with Jim Brown on top.
Signed memorabilia is a popular category for Collection Auctions, and one of the leading items in the sale is a 1971 HOF Induction multi-signed baseball that includes 25 signatures. Big names on the ball are Satchel Paige, Zach Wheat, Rube Marquard, Hank Greenberg, Joe Medwick, Charlie Gehringer, Lefty Grove, Joe DiMaggio, Warren Spahn, Buck Leonard and Harry Hooper.
There will also be signed items from Jackie Robinson (including a signed 1961 Nu-Card Scoops card), Roy Campanella, Jimmie Foxx, Paul Waner, Rogers Hornsby and Roger Maris.
On the football side of things, the top signed lots are a Curly Lambeau signed 3-by-5 index card and a Johnny “Blood” McNally signed 8-by-10 photo.
Multi-signed items of note include the following: 1963 NBA All-Star team-signed sheets (26 signatures with Chamberlain and Russell), NFL HOF multi-signed helmet (47 signatures), 1951 N.Y. Yankees team-signed baseball (30 signatures) and 1967 NL All-Star team-signed baseball (23 signatures with Clemente).
Finally, a few non-sport highlights are a Ferdinand Porsche signed First Day Cover, Henry Ford signed Ford English School diploma from 1919 and a Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor signed airline menu.
