Collecting 101
Diverse selection featured in Premier’s latest sale
One huge consigned collection will lead to endless possibilities for collectors of virtually any niche area when Premier Auctions rolls out its 1,700-lot September Signature Sale this month.
“The majority of the items came from one huge collection. There’s a heavier emphasis on historical and celebrity pieces with this auction. There’s still a lot of top quality sports items to go along with it but a lot of entertainment and old Hollywood stuff,” Premier Auctions partner Matt Palermo said. “There’s over 1,700 lots in the auction and more than 60,000 signatures. When we had JSA out here, they said volume-wise it’s the most material they’ve seen in about a year.”
Premier Auctions typically conducts one sale per month on a smaller scale but the folks at the auction company were more than pleased to step up their workload in preparation for its biggest sale of the 2008 season.
“There’s some really unique and interesting items in this auction and I’m sure I had just as much fun going through it and cataloging it as the person who wins it will.”
One of the featured items in the sports arena will be a Christy Mathewson book. The high-quality in-book signature is accommponied with no personalization making it an ultra-rare example and is expected to fetch five figures when the final gavel falls.
The auction also features a huge array of Yankees collectibles, including signed teamed photos from the 1940s-1960s, a wide variety of modern Yankee dynasty items featuring a huge selection of Derek Jeter items and game-worn jerseys of modern great such as David Ortiz, Curt Schilling and several others. A Los Angeles Dodgers game-used jersey from Hall of Famer Hoyt Willhelm’s final game in 1972 will also be featured.
One of the many non-sport highlights is a Pictorial History of Television which features more than 1,000 signatures of many of the biggest stars of the early age of television. The auction also features an ultra-rare dinner banquet program from 1954 signed by the likes of President Dwight Eisenhower, Lyndon Johnson, the entire Supreme Court and presidential cabinet members. The program is framed and carries more than 50 signatures in all.
Premier’s September Signature Auction is currently underway and runs through Sept. 25. JSA Auction House LOA’s accompany all catalog lots and the entire catalog can be viewed at www.premierauctions.net.
