Records fall in Mile High Card Company's September Auction
Led by a high-end 1933 DeLong complete set and the sequel to “The Beer Box Find,” Mile High Card Company’s September Auction delivered with $2.4 million in total sales.
The individual cards from the 1933 Delong set received feverish bidding all throughout the final day of the auction, and closed at a total of $214,791. The following cards led the way: #7 Lou Gehrig NM/MT ($64,670), #6 Mickey Cochrane PSA 8 NM/MT ($13,721), #15 Riggs Stephenson PSA 8 NM/MT ($24,691) #19 Chick Hafey PSA 8 NM/MT ($24,331), and #24 Goose Goslin PSA 8 NM/MT ($14,932) setting all-time price records.
“Beer Box II” turned out to be every bit as impressive as advertised, highlighted by a non-sports section that included a 1965 Topps Gilligan's Island partial unopened wax box (15/24) that brought in just over $14,000, a 1969 Topps Wacky Ads nearly full unopened wax box (21/24) with scarce "Good and Empty" showing at $17,877, a 1965 Scanlen’s Football Six-Pack display box salesman’s sample at $11,879, and the one and only PSA graded 1967 Leaf Star Trek unopened pack that went for $9,018.
Other key pieces that returned top results were 1948-49 Leaf #8 Satchel Paige EX/NM that sold for $93,219, 1921 E121 American Caramel Babe Ruth Series of 80 PSA 3.5 VG+ that closed at $20,725, 1966 Philadelphia #31 Dick Butkus PSA 9 MINT that sold for $37,807, 1986-87 Fleer Basketball unopened wax box that went for $57,182, and an extremely scarce 1968 Topps Test Basketball unopened pack that brought in $16,901.
