Mile High Card Company closes out year with strong Elite December Auction results

A T206 Eddie Plank PSA 1 PR that sold for $41,345 was the leading item in the Elite December Auction hosted by Mile High Card Company.

Mile High Card Company (MHCC) capped off a record-setting year with its Elite December Auction, an event that featured just over 500 lots but included some of the most coveted pieces in the hobby.

Four of baseball’s most iconic cards went to the auction block, with a T206 Eddie Plank PSA 1 PR netting $41,345, a 1909 E90-1 American Caramel Joe Jackson PSA 2(MK) GOOD that brought in $17,040, a 1933 Goudey #106 Nap Lajoie SGC 6.5 EX/NM+ that sold for $34,012, and a 1952 Topps #311 Mickey Mantle PSA 4 VG/EX that fetched $27,088.

“Even as strong as our hobby is right now, I’m still amazed at the groundbreaking prices we’ve realized over the past few auctions” said MHCC President and CEO Brian Drent.

• 1915 Cracker Jack #88 Christy Mathewson SGC 88 NM/MT 8 –$11,641

• 1915 E106 American Caramel Honus Wagner Batting PSA 5 EX – $10,492

• 1951 Bowman #253 Mickey Mantle rookie card SGC 60 EX 5 – $9,314

• 1956 Topps #135 Mickey Mantle Gray Back PSA 9 MINT – $42,549

• 1933 Goudey #230 Carl Hubbell PSA 8 NM/MT – $3,079

• 1955 Topps #64 Gus Triandos PSA 9 MINT – $4,352

• 1955 Topps #92 Don Zimmer PSA 9 MINT – $6,202

• 1970 Transogram Roberto Clemente PSA 9 MINT – $4,145

Unopened material was equally successful with a 1962 Topps Baseball First Series Wax Pack 5 Cent GAI 7 NM selling for $1,703, a 1965 Topps Football 5 Cent Wax Pack GAI 7 NM going for $4,429, and a 1969 Topps Football Unopened Rack Pack (BBCE) bringing in $3,660.

Complete and near complete sets were also high in demand with the two most highly-desired baseball compilations ever produced out in front: a 1909-11 T206 Near Complete Set (475/520) with many PSA graded sold for $42,130, while a 1952 Topps Near Complete Set (377/407) with many PSA graded brought in $24,627. Also receiving strong bidding was a 1969 Topps Football Set #10 on PSA Registry with an 8.47 Set Rating that went for $10,247 and a 1970 Topps Super Glossy Football Set #1 on PSA Set Registry with a 10.972 Set Rating that sold for $7,851.

Sports autographs and memorabilia were hotly contested throughout the course of the auction with a Babe Ruth single-signed baseball graded NM/MT 8 fetching $30,117, a 1915 Joe Jackson Type I Photograph that sold for $9,898, a 1922 Christy Mathewson signed check PSA/DNA 9 with letter from Mrs. Mathewson to collector selling for $21,400, a Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig signed barnstorming photograph PSA/DNA MINT 9 that sold for $18,049, an extremely rare 1953-54 Caguas-Guayama Puerto Rico Winter League Team-Signed Baseball with (18) signatures featuring Henry Aaron that sold for $4,026, a 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers World Champions team-signed baseball with (25) signatures including Koufax, Robinson, Campanella and Hodges posting a winning bid of $3,583, a 1969-72 Willie Mays game-used Louisville Slugger bat PSA/DNA GU 8.5 that sold for $8,192, and a 1982-83 Ryne Sandberg game-used and signed rookie era Louisville Slugger bat PSA/DNA GU 10 which sold for $6,487.
