Steve Sax Collection up for bid at SCP Auctions
Dodgers great Steve Sax was waiting on-deck when teammate Kirk Gibson hit his legendary home run to beat the Oakland A’s in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series.
The jersey Sax wore that night is now up for bid as part of the Steve Sax Collection at SCP Auctions. The signed and inscribed jersey is one of more than three dozen items from his personal collection up for bid in SCP’s 2023 Spring Premier Auction, which opens April 12 and runs through April 29.
Part of the proceeds from the collection will go to the Capt. John J. Sax Foundation honoring Sax’s son, one of five U.S. Marines who were tragically killed in a training flight crash last year.
“In continuing to honor the life of a devoted flyer, the Capt. John J. Sax Foundation serves to support those who choose to further their education, exploration and passion for flight dwelling within the hearts of future aviators within the United States of America,” Steve Sax said through SCP.
Sax was a two-time World Series champion and five-time MLB All-Star. His player collection includes both his 1981 and 1988 World Series rings as well as his player trophies from those titles. He also is offering each of his five MLB All-Star rings.
Sax spent eight seasons with the Dodgers and three with the Yankees before finishing his 14-year career with the White Sox and A’s. The 1982 NL Rookie of the Year, Sax finished his career with a .281 batting average, 54 home runs, 550 RBI and 444 stolen bases.
