New high-end Topps Mercury Victor Wembanyama set has ‘out of this world’ price
Mercury is the first planet from the sun. To Topps, it also represents the first big season of some of the top athletes in sports.
The debut of 2023-24 Topps Mercury, a high-end, eight-card set with a hefty price tag of $8,000, appropriately features one of the biggest new stars in sports—7-foot-4 NBA Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama.
The name of the space-age product comes from liquid mercury and the silver look of the cards, which are printed on chromium technology, with each card featuring a dripping “M” logo.
The Mercury set, which will hit retail stores on Oct. 9, will be the first of several focusing on single athletes and their first professional seasons. It will be available at Topps.com, select hobby shops and the Fanatics Live app.
The set will include autographed relic rookie cards, with game-worn jersey patches from Wemby’s biggest games, including his NBA debut and the game in which he scored his 1,000th career point.

It also will feature ultra-rare cards limited to 10 copies or less with on-card dual autographs from Wembanyama and such athletes as former San Antonio Spurs star David Robinson, LeBron James, and NFL star C.J. Stroud.
The set will include one Chrome autograph and one autographed relic card per box.
Other details include:
• 20 base cards highlighting the most memorable moments if Wemby’s rookie season and base-card short prints in French (limited to 45 copies each), as well as rare-image variation Specimen super short prints for each of the 20 base cards (limited to 15 copies).

• 10 autograph card designs, with some autos including fun inscriptions like “Alien,” “Rookie of the Year,” and “#1 Pick.” Some relics will feature unique patches (a #1/1 Jordan Brand logo patch). Ten insert card designs, including some autos, will include subsets titled “Cote to Coast,” 1971 Topps Chrome, and Wingspan.
• Each card is encased in a mag case and foil wrap.
This will be Topps’ most widely distrusted single-athlete set to date. Other single-athlete offerings have included Topps x J-Rod (Julio Rodriguez) in 2023.
