MLB great Orel Hershiser opens sports museum, art gallery and collectibles store
Former MLB star Orel Hershiser won many baseball awards during his illustrious 18-year career, including a Cy Young Award and World Series MVP.
The Dodgers legend is now sharing some of those awards and memorabilia from his career with sports fans and collectors at Legend’s Attic, a new sports museum, art gallery and sports collectibles store in Claremont, Calif.
Legend’s Attic, which opens on June 4, features six rooms and 2,500 square feet of sports treasures.
“I have been quite fortunate over my baseball and broadcasting career,” said Hershiser, a TV color analyst for the Dodgers. “I have collected many awards and artifacts from over the years and they have wound up in my attic. I thought about what better way to share them with everyone, but in a museum/gallery setting. And we came up with the idea of opening Legends’ Attic.”
Legend’s Attic will display many of Hershiser’s awards, including his 1988 World Series trophy, Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year Award, and Most Valuable Player Awards, among others.
Hershiser’s partners in the museum/gallery are Mike Caposio and Eddie Allizadeh. The gallery also features the work of well-known sports artist Dave Hobrecht, who recently sold 10 Dodger art pieces to Hershiser. Those pieces will be displayed in a room that includes a painting entitled “Grace” that depicts Jackie Robinson praying around a dinner table with former Dodger greats Roy Campanella and Don Newcombe and social rights activist Martin Luther King Jr.
The attic also will feature a Dodger room with all types of Dodgers and baseball memorabilia; a Lakers room with memorabilia featuring Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal, Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, and other Laker greats; a Helmet Room featuring signed football helmets from several NFL greats; an arcade room featuring some of the greatest sports games; and a room featuring sports artists and art pieces depicting Dodger greats, as well as sports legends such as Vince Lombardi, Roberto Clemente, Tiger Woods and others.
The attic also will have a sports card collecting and trading area for fans and collectors interested in updating their personal collections.
Legend’s Attic, located at 619 W. Foothill Blvd. in Claremont, is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Admission is free.
