Vintage cards set records in REA September auction
The September Encore Auction at Robert Edward Auctions features several records for vintage cards, including a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card.
The auction, which featured more than 3,600 lots, totaled nearly $1.7 million in sales over 73,000 bids.
The top seller was a new-to-the-hobby 1952 Topps Mantle graded SGC GOOD+ 2.5 that sold for $49,200, a record for this SGC grade.
Other record-setting cards included a 1910-11 M116 Sporting Life Honus Wagner Blue Background (SGC POOR 1) that sold for $27,000.
“This was one of our largest Encore Auctions to date and we saw tremendous engagement across baseball, other sports and even non-sport items, including Pokemon, in this event,” REA President Brian Dwyer said.
Other top sellers include:
• 1909-1911 T206 White Border Sam Crawford with Bat (PSA VG 3) for $25,800, a record for the grade with the rare Uzit back.
• 1954 Wilson Franks Ted Williams (SGC EX 5) $23,400, a record for the SGC grade.
• 1909-1911 T206 White Border John McGraw Portrait with Cap (PSA EX 5) $19,200, a record for the grade with the Black Lenox back.
• Signed 1958 Topps #418 World Series Batting Foes Mickey Mantle and Hank Aaron (PSA GOOD 2 with MINT 9 Signature) $18,000.
• 1909-1911 T206 White Border Christy Mathewson Portrait (SGC VG 3) $17,400, a record for the grade with a Brown Hindu back.
• Signed 1968 Topps #280 Mickey Mantle (PSA EX-MT 6) $16,800.
• 1915 E145 Cracker Jack #88 Christy Mathewson (SGC EX 5) $16,200, a record for the SGC grade.
• 1909-1911 T206 White Border Ty Cobb Portrait Red Background (SGC VG 3) $14,400, a record for the SGC grade with the Tolstoi back.
• 1909-1911 T206 White Border Ty Cobb Bat On Shoulder (SGC VG+ 3.5) $13,800.
• 1915 E145 Cracker Jack #43 Rube Marquard (SGC MINT 9, highest graded) $12,000.
• 1887 N172 Old Judge Charles “Old Hoss” Radbourn (PSA GOOD 2) $11,100.
• 1962 Topps Football #17 Mike Ditka Rookie (PSA NM-MT 8) $10,800.
• 1971 Topps #640 Frank Robinson (PSA MINT 9) $10,200, a record for the card.
