Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner cards among vintage classics in REA October auction
A high-grade Mickey Mantle card from a near-complete set of Topps 1953 cards highlights the October Encore Auction at Robert Edward Auctions.
The auction features dozens of vintage classics, including a 1910-1911 M116 Sporting Life Honus Wagner Blue Background graded SGC EX+ 5.5, one of the most coveted Wagner cards due to its distinctive style and rarity.
The 1953 Topps Mickey Mantle card is graded PSA 7 and comes from a near-complete set break of the popular Topps set, with almost every card graded PSA 8 or better.
The auction, which includes nearly 3,500 items, will run through Oct. 22. All items have a starting bid of $10.
“I’m incredibly excited about the diversity we have available in our October Encore Auction,” REA President Brian Dwyer said. “We’ve got some of the most iconic vintage cards in a range of desirable grades, some fantastic original photos, and some unique items that even the most seasoned collectors may not be familiar with. These are the types of things that we always look forward to sharing with our expansive community of collectors.”
Other notable items in REA’s October Auction include:
• T206 Ty Cobb Portrait Red and Green Backgrounds. Two of the most iconic cards from the Monster Set, the red background is graded PSA VG-EX 4 while the green background is a PSA VG 3.
• 1933 & 1934 Goudey Lou Gehrigs. Two of Gehrig’s most popular cards available in PSA 4 and 3, respectively.
• 1933 R333 DeLong Gum #7 Lou Gehrig (PSA GOOD+ 2.5).
• Willie Mays 1952 Topps (PSA VG 3) and 1951 Bowman Rookie (PSA GOOD 2).
• Jackie Robinson 1952 Topps (PSA VG 3) and 1949 Bowman (PSA VG 3).
• 1908-1911 PC743 H. H. Bregstone Postcards Rube Waddell (SGC POOR 1). Described by the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards as “among the rarest of early 20th century baseball player postcards.”
• 1928 Fro-Joy Ice Cream Babe Ruth near-complete set (5/6). A rare Ruth collectible from an August 1928 Fro-Joy Ice Cream promotion, which included a series of six black-and-white Ruth cards each with a different image.
• 1952 Bowman Mickey Mantle (PSA VG 3).
• T206 Carolina Brights Backs. Ten T206 cards with Carolina Brights advertising backs.
• 2019 Panini Prizm Draft Picks Football #72 Patrick Mahomes II Blue Prizm (PSA GEM MINT 10). Available in Blue and Silver Prizm.
The auction also features more than a dozen original Type 1 photos, including: a 1926 George Sisler E.F.S. original photograph; a Type 1 original Babe Ruth photo taken around 1920 during the filming of Headin' Home, which starred Ruth; two original Type 1 Don Wingfield photos, one of Whitey Ford from the 1950s and the other of “Mr. Tiger” Al Kaline taken during the 1960s.
