How will Luka trade to Lakers impact hobby, Doncic trading cards?
Will the jaw-dropping trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers on Feb. 1 have an impact on the hobby? Doncic is one of the top three or four NBA names among collectors. Now he joins forces with the biggest name in today’s hoops hobby, LeBron James.
If anything, the alliance may elevate Doncic in the eyes of collectors. Playing for one team your whole career used to be a badge of honor, but we’re long past those days, thanks to free agency. So Doncic’s value stands to rise (or fall) based on his performance. While the skeptical among us wonder if he and James will be able to share the spotlight, realists know that two star players can also propel each other to new heights.
Doncic is only 25, but he’s been a lightning rod for collectors since his debut in Dallas in 2018. His rookie cards have consistently sold for five figures, and that’s not changing. Among the latest on eBay: a signed 2018-19 Panini Flawless patch card sold for $21,100 on 124 bids in late January. It was graded BGS 9 and marked #10/25.
