In May I shared some of the hobby mantras I try to follow. However, I didn't share them all. This month I return to finish the job and share the rest.

Never Under-Insure Your Packages

Whether you sell or trade sometimes you have to ship your cards to the intended destination. Remember you are responsible for the safe arrival of those cards. Don't under-insure those packages. It can cost you if something goes wrong.

If you are shipping or receiving high-end cards, collectibles insurance is something you should look into. There are numerous companies that offer insurance and it is something that I utilize as a buyer and seller.

Proper Packaging

Treat cards as if they are being sent to you. Whenever you are shipping cards to someone else, package them the way you would like to receive them. Bubble wrap, bubble mailers, cardboard, team bags and painters tape are your friends. Pack it to be safe and secure but also don't overdo it where it takes half a day for the receiver to finally unpack it.

Pre-Grade Your Own Cards

Collectors should pre-grade their own cards before sending them to a card grader. Beckett

If you submit cards as I do, you know the importance of inspecting your cards prior to submission. Yes, I know there are hobby companies happy to provide that service for a fee. However, I believe this is something you can do yourself with the proper tools, magnification and honest assessment. Save that pre-inspection money and get more cards.

It's OK To Pivot

Has the hobby gotten boring or stale? Are you not enjoying it like you once did? It's not uncommon but that doesn't have to be the end-all, be-all. Don't be afraid to try a different angle or new way to collect. You might be surprised how a slight change can reinvigorate you and re-ignite your passion.

Hobby Etiquette

Most of us have been on a hobby buy, sell or trade message board or forum online. Remember to follow proper etiquette and be respectful. Someone may not be as experienced or knowledgeable as you. Use the opportunity to teach or help.

Also remember to be respectful to the original poster’s post. If they posted that they are buying a certain player or cards, wait till they pass if you want to jump on an offer from someone else.

Wherever You Store Your Cards Is Your Vault

The new Beckett Vault for storing trading cards. Beckett

Yes, I know vaults have become a big thing in the hobby, especially the high-end part of it. There is a need and a place for them and I fully understand that, but don't forget being able to see, look at and hold your cards daily is an important reason we all do this. Don't lose sight of that.

Hobby Hate

I debated using this one but recently I've seen an increase in jealousy, disdain and vitriol between collectors, even in the content space. Some people just can't root for other people sometimes.

Two things to consider: do not let it deter you or change how you enjoy the hobby; and if you are guilty of it, remember it's a waste of your time and energy. It's unproductive and frankly a bad reflection of you.
