A 1954 Topps Hank Aaron rookie card has broken the record for the highest-selling card featuring the Hall of Fame slugger.

The card, graded PSA 9, reached a record $660,000 (with the buyer's premium) prior to extended bidding and eventually sold for $720,000. The previous record for an Aaron card was set at Heritage Auctions in February 2021 at $645,000, including the buyer’s premium.

Bidding on the card ends tonight with extended bidding starting at 7 p.m.

“One of the all-time greats has secured a new record,” said Jesse Craig, director of business development at PWCC Marketplace. “The only question left is how high the card will go by the end of auction. The vintage card market is seeing strong sales for keystone cards right now and the 1954 Topps Aaron deserves to be in that discussion when you consider Hank’s legacy.”

Aaron broke Babe Ruth’s home run record when he hit his 715th home run in April 1974. He finished his career with a 755 career home runs. Aaron passed away on Jan. 22 at the age of 86.

Aaron’s rookie card is one of the most sought after in the hobby. According to PSA, only 25 copies exist in a PSA 9 grade, with two selling for more than $400,000 (excluding the record sale at Heritage). Only two PSA 10s are known to exist, with one selling for $357,594 at SCP Auctions in 2012.
