Diego Maradona’s historic ‘Hand of God’ ball up for bid at Goldin
The jersey that soccer legend Diego Maradona wore when he scored his famous “Hand of God” goal during the 1986 World Cup sold for a record $9.3 million last year.
Now the ball from the infamous moment is up for bid, highlighting Goldin’s January Sports Elite auction.
Maradona, who died in 2020, scored both goals in Argentina’s 1986 World Cup quarterfinal victory over England. On the first goal, he palmed the ball past England goalkeeper Peter Shilton and later said the goal was “a little from the head of Maradona, and a little with the hand of God.”
The famous ball had an opening bid of $500,000 and has a current bid of $700,000 in the auction that runs through Feb. 8.
“Our New Year's resolution at Goldin is to offer collectors more exceptional items than ever before,” Goldin Executive Chairman and Founder Ken Goldin said. “Whether you’ve been collecting your whole life or you’re buying your first trading card this is the year to get involved in the hobby.
