Connor McDavid 1/1 NHL Shield card highlights PWCC’s October auction
When the NHL drops the puck on a new season this week, Connor McDavid will enter the 2023-24 campaign as the reigning NHL MVP and one of the greatest players of all time.
McDavid, 26, won his third Hart Trophy last season, producing the greatest season of his already illustrious career with a career-high 64 goals and 153 points in 82 games to sweep all the performance-related NHL awards last season.
In eight seasons in the league, the eight-time All-Star has scored more than 100 points six times and led the NHL in scoring five times, putting him in the elite company of legends Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Gordie Howe, Phil Esposito, Bobby Hull and Jaromir Jagr.
McDavid also has set records on the NHL card market, with a PSA 10 version of his 2015 Upper Deck Rookie Patch Auto card selling for $228,000 at Heritage Auctions last year. Other McDavid rookie cards have also topped six figures, while his lesser cards routinely sell for five figures.
PWCC Marketplace has a new McDavid gem in its October Premier Auction, which opened Oct. 5 and runs through Oct. 19.
The 2020 Upper Deck The Cup Connor McDavid Patch Auto card is a 1/1 and features a game-used patch of the NHL shield. The card, which has a DNA 10 autograph grade, didn’t hit the market until earlier this year due to pandemic-related production delays. It is one of 110 1/1 Black Foil NHL Shield cards in the set.

Other key cards in the PWCC auction include:
• 2018 Panini Flawless Platinum Luka Doncic Rookie Patch Auto 1/1 (BGS 9). Panini’s 2018 Flawless set was the first to feature game-worn memorabilia cards for players in the 2018 NBA Draft class. Of the eight game-worn autos in the set, Doncic’s 1/1 is the most sought-after.
• 2009 Bowman Chrome Xfractor Mike Trout Rookie Auto /225 #BDPP89 (BGS 10 BLACK LABEL). Out of all of Trout’s Chrome base rookie cards and refractors, this example is the only one to earn a BGS 10 Black Label.
• 1958 Americana LTDA. Futebol Pele Rookie Card (PSA 6.5 EXMT+). Brazilian card maker Americana LTDA manufactured this Pelé rookie card to pay tribute to his first World Championship with Brazil in 1958. Fans could collect and redeem the cards for prizes such as bicycles and washing machines. Since they were hand-cut and inserted into albums or mailed in for a prize, few survived, making it one of the world's rarest Pelé cards in existence.
• 1986 Fleer Sticker Michael Jordan Rookie #8 (PSA 10 GEM MINT). In 1986, Fleer created a set of stickers to supplement its iconic base set. Out of 11 sticker issues in the release, Jordan’s example was considered the anchor of the set. PSA has graded more than 18,000 of these stickers, but fewer than one percent have earned a PSA 10 grade.
