Collectors already sold on Orioles top prospect, MLB call-up Jackson Holliday
There are plenty of big-name MLB stars inspiring collector passion these days. So throughout the new season, you’ll find us checking in on the auction frenzy that always surrounds Aaron Judge, Ronald Acuna Jr., Shohei Ohtani, and Mookie Betts, among others.
But let’s turn our attention to MLB's top prospect, Jackson Holliday, who was called up by the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday and is drawing as much buzz as anyone.
Baseball’s No. 1 overall pick in 2022, Holliday is on a fast track with the Orioles. He advanced in 2023 from Low-A to High-A to Double-A to Triple-A, hitting .323 with 113 runs, 75 RBI and 24 steals.
This spring, Holliday picked up where he left off before being called up to the major leagues. Playing for the Triple-A Norfolk Tides, he hit .400 with two home runs during Week 1. One of those homers is already the stuff of legend: On April 2, he called his shot and hit a home run off the “batting eye” spot in deep centerfield.
Holliday’s shoulder-shrugging quote after his feat: “I told our hitting coaches that I was going to try to hit a homer off the batter's eye, and obviously that actually happened."
The next day, Holliday starred in the Tides' record-breaking 26-11 win over the Charlotte Knights, going 4-for-6 at the plate with five runs scored. After nine games at Triple-A Norfolk, Holliday is batting .342 with two home runs, nine RBI, 18 runs and 11 walks.
Even before his call-up, collectors are already sold on Holliday, the son of seven-time MLB All-Star Matt Holliday. There are some 15,000 Holliday-related items listed on eBay, and that number will soar in coming months.
Among recent highlights is a 2022 Bowman Chrome Orange Refractor that bought $9,809 on 39 bids. The autographed card was marked #13/25 and graded BGS 9.5.
