BREAKING NEWS: eBay, PSA announce sale of Goldin auction house in blockbuster hobby deal
eBay and Collectors, the parent company of card-grading giant PSA, announced a blockbuster deal Wednesday that includes the sale of auction house Goldin to eBay.
eBay, the collectible industry’s largest online marketplace, had added Goldin Co., one of the hobby’s largest auction houses, to its line of collecting services, while PSA, the hobby’s largest card-grading service, has purchased the eBay Vault.
According to eBay and Collectors, two of the hobby’s largest sports collectibles companies, the move will create more streamlined buying, selling, grading and storage opportunities for collectors and hobbyists.
“eBay is relentlessly focused on providing the best inventory and the highest level of trust for our global community,” eBay CEO Jamie Iannone said in a release from eBay. “The deals announced today further our mission of reinventing the future of ecommerce for enthusiasts, and we are excited to partner with PSA to offer a simpler, more personalized experience for passionate collectors. PSA is a premier player in trading cards and collectibles with unmatched capabilities, and we believe our shared expertise will inspire even more people to sell, shop and collect with confidence.”
“This will benefit the hobby above all else, which is the primary goal of this innovative partnership between eBay and PSA,” Collectors CEO Nat Turner said. “We will drastically improve the collector experience by creating a seamless, end-to-end journey. No matter an individual collector’s goals, this partnership will make collecting safer, easier and more fun. We’re excited to combine the scale and trust across eBay's global marketplace with PSA's authentication and grading expertise.”
According to a joint release from the two companies, the new partnership will combine services from eBay and Collectors/PSA “to remove friction from the hobby and power a sophisticated, integrated program to buy, sell, grade, and store trading cards and collectible card games.”
This partnership will extend PSA’s card-grading services to eBay customers, while PSA will offer grading customers the ability to quickly list and sell trading cards on eBay when a card is graded. PSA’s current grading and selling options will remain available.
eBay’s acquisition of Goldin will enhance its existing marketplace options by expanding its sports collectible inventory, while also increasing Goldin’s audience of potential buyers and sellers of high-end trading cards and sports memorabilia.
“We see so much opportunity ahead with eBay, and I am incredibly excited for this new chapter for the Goldin brand,” Goldin founder and CEO Ken Goldin said. “This deal will enhance and expand our reach as we continue to do what we do best—source incredible collector’s items—and connect with millions of enthusiasts around the world. I am looking forward to an amazing future with eBay.”
PSA will maintain the eBay vault for storing and securing valuable sports cards and memorabilia for eBay customers and, once the deal is finalized, will merge the service with its own vault services.
