With the Philadelphia Eagles celebrating their Feb. 9 Super Bowl victory, our Feb. 15 issue of Sports Collectors Digest celebrates champions from long ago that were honored and commemorated on trading cards.

As our “We Are The Champions” cover story highlights, card companies have been featuring the world’s greatest champions on cardboard since tobacco cards of the 1880s.

Longtime freelancer George Vrechek details how card brands like Goodwin Champions and Allen & Ginter featured champions from throughout the world of sports, from baseball stars like Cap Anson and Babe Ruth to boxer Jack Johnson and such colorful adventurers and entertainers as Buffalo Bill and Annie Oakley.

As Vrechek points out, these classic, vintage cards could even have their own theme song these days: Queen's “We Are The Champions.”
