1965 Type 1 Photo of Joe Namath sells for six figures at Goldin
The 1965 Original Type 1 Photo of Joe Namath sold for a record $197,640 in the November Elite Auction at Goldin Co.
The photo was used for the iconic 1965 Topps Namath rookie card, one of the most coveted football cards in the hobby. The sale set a record for Type 1 football photos.
The auction also featured:
• A 1967 Muhammad Ali/Wilt Chamberlain dual-signed Type 1 photo from the “Wide World of Sports” fight promotional appearance, which captures the two legends sparring on stage, that sold for $17,080.
• A 1984-85 Michael Jordan Rookie signed Type 1 photo for $17,080.
• A 1994 Tiger Woods Type 1 photo from the year Woods graduated high school and became the youngest U.S. Amateur Championship winner for $7,595.
Other top Type 1 photos in the auction included:
• Michael Jordan 1988 Playoffs Type 1 photo by the New York Times from when Jordan had back-to-back 50 point games for the first time in NBA playoff history ($6,100).
• One of the two known 1983 George Brett "Pine Tar Game" Type 1 photos depicting Brett as he was being restrained from attacking the home-plate umpire who held Brett's illegal bat behind his back ($4,574).
• 1985 Mike Tyson Sports Illustrated Shoot Type 1 photo capturing Tyson in trainer Cus D'Amato's Catskills gym ($3,660).
