When Pete Rose lined a sharp single to left-center field against the San Diego Padres on Sept. 11, 1985, he became baseball’s all-time hit king, setting off fireworks and a wild celebration at Cincinnati’s Riverfront Stadium.

Rose’s career hit No. 4,192 broke Ty Cobb’s all-time hits record, giving the Reds legend one of baseball’s most sacred records.

The batting gloves Rose was wearing when he collected historic hit No. 4,192 are now up for bid, headlining Huggins & Scott’s Summer Auction.

The batting gloves were signed and dated by Rose, who passed away last year, and have been photo-matched by Sports Investors Authentication. The gloves have been in the personal collection of a Major League Baseball front-office executive for the last 40 years. A ticket stub and a pair of lineup cards from the record-setting game are also featured in the auction.

The auction, which runs through Sept. 4, also features for the first time original artwork featuring Mel Ott and Jimmie Foxx from the 1934-1936 R327 Diamond Stars set; a 1984-1985 Star Basketball Chicago Bulls complete set that includes a Michael Jordan Rookie (CGC EX/NM 6); as well as Ozzie Smith’s 1980 Gold Glove Award, the first of 13 consecutive Gold Gloves.

One of the most unique items in the auction is a 1941 “50th Anniversary of the Hot Dog” testimonial framed display with a full proclamation that’s been signed by 135 attendees of the golden jubilee celebration, including Babe Ruth, Ed Barrow, and Ford Frick. The one-of-a-kind piece comes from the celebratory dinner hosted by the New York Baseball writers to honor a half-century since the hot dog was created in 1891.

“This might be one of our most diverse events to date with some incredible fresh-to-market items making their debut for collectors,” said Ron Oser, vice president & director of consignments for Huggins & Scott. “This auction exemplifies how many unique and interesting collectibles are still up for grabs in the hobby.”
