Babe Ruth Sports Kings card, 1910-11 Honus Wagner gems highlight REA June auction

Babe Ruth was still the King of Sports in 1933, as evidenced by the longstanding value of his iconic 1933 Sports Kings card.

A 1933 R338 Babe Sport Kings #2 card, graded PSA 7, sold for $48,000 in the June Monthly Auction at REA.

Two other top sellers featured another early-1900s baseball legend. A 1910 E90-2 American Caramel Honus Wagner card (PSA POOR 1) and a 1911 M110 Sporting Life Cabinet Honus Wagner (PSA GOOD 2) sold for $30,000 and $26,400, respectively, with the former setting a record for the grade.

The auction also included some exciting football card sales, including a 2020 Panini Prizm Football #343 Jalen Hurts Rookie Gold Vinyl #1/5 (PSA 9) that sold for $12,600 and a 1977 Topps Football unopened wax box for $5,160.

“This event had some very exciting results in several areas of the hobby and it set the tone for our much-anticipated Summer Catalog Auction next month,” REA President Brian Dwyer said. “We’re going to have a fantastic line-up of cards and collectibles in that event and we’re excited to show it off, along with a great selection of items from our Marketplace, during The National.”

• 1951 Bowman #253 Mickey Mantle Rookie (SGC Authentic) $9,300.

• 1910 E103 Williams Caramel Ty Cobb (PSA FAIR 1.5) $9,000.

• 1934 R320 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig (PSA 4.5) $8,400.

• 1909-1911 T206 White Border Shag Shaughnessy Southern Leaguer (PSA 6) (Old Mill Back) $8,100.

• 1887 N365 Lone Jack “Inventors and Inventions” Collection (14) Including Thomas Edison and Benjamin Franklin $7,800.

• 1922 E121 American Caramel (Series of 120) Ty Cobb Batting (PSA 3) $6,300.

• 1950 Bowman Football #45 Otto Graham Rookie (SGC 8) $4,560.

• Signed 1954-1955 Topps Hockey #8 Gordie Howe (PSA 3) with auto $4,560.

REA’s Summer Catalog Auction kicks off on July 29 and runs through Aug. 17. REA will be set up at booths 2310 and 812 during the National Sports Collectors Convention in Rosemont, Ill. July 30-Aug. 3.
