Signed photo of Gehrig, DiMaggio featured by Clean Sweep Auctions
A unique 7x9 Associated Press photo showing a smiling Lou Gehrig jumping over a baseball bat held by Joe DiMaggio with signatures from both players, along with legendary scout Paul Krichell, who discovered Gehrig.
The distinctive photo is Lot 1 in Clean Sweep Auctions’ June auction currently underway. The auction ends at 11 p.m. Eastern time on June 3.
The photo is “one of the finest quality signed photos in the hobby in our opinion,” Clean Sweep Auction stated, adding that it is a“unique and wonderful image even if it was not signed,” but “the autographs bring this to another level.”
The autographs are PSA graded 8 for Gehrig, 9 for DiMaggio and 7 for Krichell.
A terrific framed display with a superb 1931 Babe Ruth signature/high-quality original photo combination is also up for bid.
Clean Sweep has a superb Grover Cleveland Alexander TLS in which he discusses Monty Stratton, and a signed 1953 Topps Mickey Mantle slabbed PSA 8 for the signature.
Other key lots include the extremely rare Lloyd Waner signed Perez Steele postcard, a pure PSA 10 1989 Perez Steele Celebration set that is No. 1 on the registry, a fine looking SGC 4 E90-1 Cy Young, and a PSA 4 1933 Goudey #144 Babe Ruth.
The auction has a new run of the great and undervalued 1933 Worch Cigar cards, headlined by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in the key lots section. There is a really nice SGC 6.5 1948 Leaf Babe Ruth, two 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle Rookies (PSA 2.5 and 6), a superb quality 1951 Fischer’s Bread label set, a 1955 Topps Roberto Clemente RC PSA 6 with great centering, a gorgeous T9 boxing slabbed set, and a 1934 Tour of Japan ball with Ruth and Gehrig.
Baseball cards begin the main portion of the auction. Interesting graded items include some very clean 1907 Grignon Cubs postcards, an E102 Ty Cobb SGC 1, a T206 Ty Cobb Bat Off Shoulder PSA 3, a 1933 DeLong Lou Gehrig SGC 2.5, a fine fresh run of Worch Cigar HOFers, a strikingly well centered 1952 Topps Eddie Mathews RC PSA 3, a Hunter’s Weiners Stan Musial, 1954 Bowman Ted Williams PSA 6, 1954 Dan Dee Mickey Mantle PSA 3.5, 1954 Topps Hank Aaron RC PSA 5.5, and a 2011 Topps Traded Gold PSA 9 Mike Trout Rookie. Baseball card sets and lots start at the turn of the 20th Century. Clean Sweep has some pre-war lots and its usual run of Topps and Bowman sets from the 1950s and 1960s.
Baseball autographs include four signed black-and-white HOF Plaques (Baker, Hornsby, McKechnie, Young).
Basketball card collectors will see a 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan PSA 8 and three 1986-7 Fleer PSA 8 packs. Basketball autograph collectors will see an early Kobe Bryant full name signed jersey as well as a LeBron James signed Cavs jersey and a large and fresh run of single signed basketballs with many scarcities.
