Rare Waddell Card Surfaces at Kevin Savage Cards
Kevin Savage Cards is now offering a rare opportunity for vintage card collectors. The company is selling a 1903 E107 Type 1 card of Rube Waddell, graded PSA 4. The price is $25,000.
The card, which has a back that reads “One of a hundred and fifty prominent Baseball players,” has only four examples that have been graded by PSA, and this is only the second example with printing on the back. Of those two cards with printing on the back, this is the highest graded one in PSA’s Registry.
According to the 2011 Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards, the E107 set carries significance as the first major baseball card set since the 1880s, paving the way for the tobacco cards that followed in the next 20 years. The catalog states few cards are ever found in better than Very Good condition.
Waddell, a member of baseball’s Hall of Fame, pitched for five teams in his career, having the greatest success with the Philadelphia A’s, in which he had four straight 20-win seasons. He finished his career with a 193-143 record and a 2.16 ERA from 1897-1910. Waddell was a strikeout machine, leading the league five times.
