“Shoeless Joe” Jackson is one of the most controversial and beloved players in baseball history, one many believe should be in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

But before he became one of the game’s greatest hitters and the biggest name in the infamous 1919 Black Sox scandal, Jackson starred in the minor leagues and other pro and semi-pro leagues around the South.

Before he was signed by Connie Mack’s Philadelphia Athletics and traded to the Cleveland Naps, Jackson toiled in the minors, playing stints with the Greenville (S.C.) Spinners, the Savannah (Ga.) Indians, and the New Orleans Pelicans.

It was during his time with the hometown Spinners that Jackson earned his famous nickname by playing with no shoes on his blistered feet. After he was banned from baseball over the Black Sox scandal, Jackson returned to Greenville, now home to the Shoeless Joe Jackson Museum.

Jackson’s vintage baseball cards have been popular among collectors for decades. One of his earliest cards is up for bid in the April 3-4 Spring Sports Card Catalog Auction at Heritage Auctions. The 1910 T210 Old Mill Cigarettes Series 8 Joe Jackson card is graded SGC VG 3 and is one of only 17 examples graded by PSA and SGC.

“Given his status among the greatest hitters of all time, as well as his involvement in the controversial 1919 Chicago Black Sox scandal, it is understandable that Shoeless Joe Jackson is incredibly popular among collectors to this day,” says Chris Ivy, Heritage’s director of sports auctions. “Material from different points during his Major League career are very scarce.”

Also up for bid are two rare modern gems expected to attract bid dollars.

A 2000 Upper Deck Michael Jordan/Kobe Bryant Jersey Combo-Auto #MJ/KB-A card (PSA 6, Auto 9) is No. 5 of just 10 examples and includes a uniform swatch and a signature from each of the hardwood legends.

Only four examples have been graded, with only one graded higher. The card was the first ever signed by Bryant and Jordan. The 2000-01 UD Game Jersey Edition set is the first to offer dual-swatch auto cards.

Also featured is an MLB Gold Logoman card featuring 2025 MVPs Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge. The 2025 Topps Chrome Update Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge MLB Gold Logoman MVP Auto Relic card features the MLB gold logos only worn by MVPs, Rookies of the Year, and Cy Young Award winners. The 2025 season was the first year of the program.

The auction also includes 95 lots from The Golden Age Collection — Part Four, a group of period-signed vintage sports cards from the 1940s and ’50s. While many autographed card collections include signatures acquired long after athletes retired, the autographs in this collection were inscribed in person during or close to the years when the cards were issued. It was compiled by a collector who took cards to stadiums, restaurants, hotel lobbies and anywhere else he believed he could acquire an autograph.
