Jim Thorpe, Mickey Mantle, Jackie Robinson cards highlight LOTG auction
The Late Summer Premier Auction at Love of the Game Auctions features cards and collectibles from such baseball legends as Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle and Jackie Robinson.
But the best all-around athlete represented in the auction is Jim Thorpe, who won two Olympic gold medals for the U.S. while also playing professional baseball, football and basketball. Thorpe, who is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, was the first Native American to win a gold medal for the United States and was considered the greatest athlete of the early 20th Century.
The LOTG auction, which runs through Sept. 28, is highlighted by a 1916 Sporting News card of Thorpe graded PSA NM-MT 8.
The September auction features 2,123 lots, the largest auction to date for LOTG.
“Our team has assembled a stellar auction with fascinating memorabilia for collectors,” said Al Crisafulli, LOTG founder and auction director. “In this sale, we are offering an assortment of rare cards, photographs, and vintage baseball, football, and basketball items with a rich history.”
Other auction highlights include:
