Eruzione ‘Miracle On Ice’ Collection Expected to Break Records

The big-ticket items just keep coming in the hobby, with the latest news coming form Heritage regarding the sale of the Miracle on Ice Collection of Mike Eruzione. This includes the jersey and stick Eruzione used in the 1980 classic against the Soviets.

In the latest issue of SCD on page 2, you will find what are likely artifacts that will once again re-write record books when it comes to the sale prices of sports memorabilia.

Heritage Auctions is will be offering the Mike Eruzione "Miracle on Ice" Collection in its Feb. 23, 2013 Platinum Auction that will be conducted live in New York.

Among the items in the collection is the jersey Eruzione wore in the 1980 classic Miracle on Ice game in which the U.S. defeated the Soviet Union during Olympic competition. The estimate for the jersey is $1 million.

Also in the sale will be the stick Eruzione used to score the winning goal against the Soviets. This piece is estimated at $100,000.

The third gem to be offered is Eruzione's jersey from the gold medal game in the 1980 Olympics. This is estimated to bring $200,000.

Hockey artifacts don't usually bring the sports memorabilia market to the forefront, but this trio of items is sure to command big media attention and bids for the significance they represent in what is arguably the greatest sports moments ever.

In other auction news, there are some marquee items that will be sold in the next few days from various auction houses. Ending tonight is the Grey Flannel sale, highlighted by the first pair of pinstripe pants worn by Babe Ruth. As of this writing, the pants were at $94,948. A 1916-18 Ty Cobb bat was past $41,000 and a great game-worn 1960s Packers jersey of Paul Hornung, signed by the Hall of Famer, was above $37,000.

Over at Memory Lane, a 1909 T206 Eddie Plank Sweet Caporal back, PSA 5, is at $67,500, with a 1916 M101-5 Sporting News Babe Ruth, PSA 5, not far behind at $45,000. The 1888 Scrapps Card Find is moderate in its bidding, and the much-publicized Babe Ruth ball that comes with actual video of the signing in 1929 is past $8,000.Bidding end\s Dec. 15 at Memory Lane.

Another highly-publicized item of late was the T206 Ed Walsh card with the Old Mill blue back - a first for the hobby at auction. Offered by Huggins and Scott, the card has yet to open at $15,000. Bidding ends Dec. 13 in this sale, which also includes a 1907 Detroit Tigers Seamless Steel Tubes Ty Cobb postcard, which is currently at $8,500.
