Big Bids Highlight Second Day of the National
Finally made the show floor on the afternoon of Day 2. That said, I've seen very little of the show floor, but I will make up for that. From what I saw, there are some amazing pieces here, and that doesn't include what's in the booths of auction houses.
The floor was fairly business this afternoon, but I expect things to really pick up come Friday and Saturday, especially as the signing guests grow in number and stature. Tomorrow will be fun, as I'll get to meet the artist behind the cover of the Aug. 9 issue of SCD, Jaime Cooper. To see the Yankees Dream Piece in person is the only way to truly give it justice.
As for tonight, I headed to the Heritage Platinum Night auction, and watched some amazing prices realized. Here are a handful of highlights, all showing the floor bids and not inclusive of the buyer's premium.
The Sam Snead Collection portion of the sale brought roughly $1.1 million for the 14 lots offered. The amazing part of that is one bidder won 12 of the 14 lots. The 1946 British Open Claret Jug brought $220,000. Snead's 1951 PGA Championship trophy sold for $100,000 and the 1954 Masters Championship trophy garnered $160,000 in bids. The 1959 Ryder Cup championship trophy sold for $150,000.
A Shoe Joe Jackson game-used bat sold for $70,000. But the power of Babe ruth was seen not only in signed ball and game-used bats, but also in a collection of World Series ticket stubs in which he hit a home run from 1921-32. The collecting of nine stubs sold for $65,000. A Mickey Mantle World Series ticket stub collection in which he hit a home run was $7,500.
Among cards, a 1912 E300 Plow's Candy Christy Mathewson card, graded PSA 8, sold for $95,000.

- 1966-68 Brian Piccolo game-used Bears jersey: $33,750
- 1968-69 Minnesota Piper game-worn shooting jacket: $10,000
- 1970 Julius Erving U. of Massachusetts Redmen uniform: $72,500
- 1927-28 Babe Ruth game-worn Bustin' Babes barnstorming cap: $130,000
- Early 1930s Lou Gehrig game-worn Yankees cap: $200,000
- 1935 Babe Ruth game-used Boston Braves cap: $120,000.
