1933 Goudey Sheet, Complete Sets and Havlicek Gems at Mile High
There are some names that just make people jump, even if they have a days to get their bids in before an auction ends. In the recently opened Mile High Card Co. Premium Auction, the company’s last for 2013, Bobby Orr, Mickey Mantle, Sherry Magee, Johnny Unitas, John Havlicek and Roger Maris were attracting numerous bids – and with good reason.
The Mile High auction (www.milehighcardco.com) ends Dec. 19, and those names mentioned above will go a long way toward the bidding total for the Colorado-based company.
The aforementioned Mantle is led by his familiar 1952 Topps card. This example is graded GAI 8, with bids passing $25,000 at press time. Not too far behind is a 1969 Topps John Havlicek card graded PSA 10, which should have bidders up to the wee hours of the morning battling each other.
Two Bobby Orr cards are being sought by hockey collectors. They include a 1966-67 Topps USA Test issue graded SGC 88 and a 1966 Topps rookie graded PSA 8. A 1968 O-Pee-Chee example graded PSA 9 is also available.
And rounding out the big names alluded to above, Roger Maris’ 1962 Topps, graded PSA 9, is over $10,000 and his 1958 Topps graded PSA 9 is approaching $5,000 at press time. The famous 1909 T206 Sherry Magie (Magee) error is also in the lineup, as is a 1957 Topps John Unitas, graded PSA 8.5. Another football single drawing heavy bidding is a 1972 Topps Roger Staubach that has earned the coveted Gem Mint grade.
The singles in this auction could take up pages on this site, including a 1915 Cracker Jack Walter Johnson PSA 8, 1952 Topps Andy Pafko SGC 88, 1915 Cracker Jack Ty Cobb SGC 88 and 1952 Topps Jackie Robinson PSA 8 – however they might take second billing to the amazing selection of high-grade complete sets found in this sale. The complete sets are led by a 1954 Topps set that is No. 11 on the PSA Set Registry with a 7.974 cumulative GPA.
This set is joined by a 1952 Topps near complete set with 106 of the cards graded PSA 8. A 1957 near complete set (406/407) and 1958 Topps complete set, both in high-grade condition, are also currently in the Top 10 in bidding at press time. Sets from 1956, 1962 and 1963 aren’t far behind.
A rare gem in the auction is a 1933 Goudey final production sheet of 24 cards, including No. 53 Babe Ruth and Tris Speaker. According to Mile High, this sheet is one of five known to exist.
In the game-used realm, Mile High has secured some excellent specimens, including a 1918-21 Babe Ruth 40K pro model bat and a 1975 Carl Yastrzemski Red Sox jersey in the baseball category. These will be joined by the football jersey of Roger Staubach from his 1962 season at Navy, complete with photo match. On the basketball side, a 1970s jersey of John Havlicek will be joined by a 1991-92 Celtics jersey of Larry Bird.
These will be joined by dozens of other complete sets, vintage singles and rare cardboard that need to be seen.
