Vintage Singles Set Records in Million-Dollar Mile High Auction

Records were set left and right in Mile High's Premium Auction, with a Rod Carew rookie bringing $95,294, and a 1957 Topps Bill Mazeroski topping $21,700, proving once again the ceiling for top-graded cards is nowhere in sight.

Mile High Card Co. has successfully wrapped up an event-filled 2014 with its Premium catalog auction on Dec. 3, which delivered tremendous results and included many record prices realized. As has become customary for MHCC over the past few years, the auction offered a smaller lot size with select higher-level items.

"We’re always excited to end the year with a special event that features some of the best material in the hobby. Our consignors and bidders expect and demand nothing less, and we wouldn’t have it any other way!” said Mile High President and CEO Brian Drent.

The auction consisted of just over 500 lots, resulting in excess of $1 million in total sales. The grand prize of the event was a 1967 Topps #569 Rod Carew rookie card that, as the only specimen graded PSA 10, represents one of the single most important pasteboards of the 1960s. When the hammer dropped, the Carew RC shattered the world-record at $95,294, more than double the amount it sold for just two years ago.

Other significant sales include 1957 Topps #24 Bill Mazeroski RC PSA 10 at $21,721 (last recorded sale was $13,897), 1933 Goudey #2 Dazzy Vance PSA 8 at $16,214 (last recorded sale was $11,850), 1955 Topps #123 Sandy Koufax RC PSA 8.5 at $10,817 (last recorded sale was $6,000), 1965 Topps #16 Astros Rookies Joe Morgan PSA 10 GEM MINT (1 of 2 in existence at $10,496; last recorded sale was $8,896), 1966 Topps #288 Dodgers Rookies Don Sutton PSA 10 GEM MINT (1 of 2 examples at $10,163; last recorded sale was $7,918), 1935 Diamond Stars #54 Hank Greenberg PSA 9 MINT at $6,360 (last recorded sale was $4,163) and 1972 Venezuelan Stamps #184 Nolan Ryan PSA 1 at $3,264 (last recorded sale was $810).

Also up for auction for the first time was a 1954 Johnston Cookies #5 Hank Aaron PSA 9 that sold for $4,393, 1958 Topps #246 Yankees Team Checklist PSA 9 that sold for $4,976, 1960 Fleer #72 Ted Williams PSA 10 that sold for $3,630 and a 1887 N172 Old Judge John "Monte" Ward PSA 6 EX/MT found a new home for $3,396.

While known for getting top prices on elite level baseball cards, MHCC re-wrote the record books on several other sports cards as well with sales of a 1957 Topps #151 Paul Hornung RC PSA 9 at $23,962 (last recorded sale was $7,299), 1962 Topps #17 Mike Ditka PSA 9 at $17,986 (last recorded sale was $9,122), 1981 Topps #216 Joe Montana RC PSA 10 at $14,954 (last recorded sale was $11,750), 1976 #148 Walter Payton RC PSA 10 at $12,915 (last recorded sale was $10,215), 1966 Philadelphia #89 Jim Taylor PSA 9 MINT at $5,181 (last recorded sale was $465), 1935 National Chicle #34 Bronko Nagurski PSA 2 at $4,316 (last recorded sale was $1,600), and 1963 Topps #96 Ray Nitschke PSA 9 at $4,393 (last recorded sale was $3,499).

A 1963 Kahn's Wieners Jerry West PSA 9 card, the only MINT example in the entire Kahn’s set, sold for $5,416.

MHCC’s selection of elite-level memorabilia grows with each passing auction and several world-class items commanded premium prices, including single-signed baseballs of Roberto Clemente ($10,163) and Dwight D. Eisenhower ($5,733), as well as team-signed balls of the 1948 Brooklyn Dodgers ($3,087) and 1992 Greensboro Hornets featuring Jeter, Pettitte and Posada ($1,268).

Other amazing items include a sensational 1911 Addie Joss benefit game original panoramic photograph ($25,987), rare 1915 Boston Red Sox ornate silk pillowcase featuring Tris Speaker ($15,081), 1888 A35 Goodwin "Baseball Champions" Premium Round Album ($9,833) and a magnificent selection of autographed George Burke photos which included Grover Cleveland Alexander ($2,551), Mel Ott ($2,171), Chief Bender ($1,170), Honus Wagner ($2,478), Hack Wilson ($1,973), Walter Johnson ($1,346), Jimmy Foxx ($1,268) and Napoleon Lajoie ($1,629).
