Historic Wayne Gretzky jersey, Pete Maravich trophy highlight summer auction at Grey Flannel
Fans and collectors immersed in the NHL and NBA playoffs may want to keep an eye on the upcoming auction at Grey Flannel Auctions.
Grey Flannel’s Summer Games catalog auction features two historic memorabilia items from two iconic NHL and NBA legends.
Up for bid in the summer auction, which opens May 22, is Wayne Gretzky’s game-worn sweater from his final NHL game.
Also highlighted is Pete Maravich’s 1970 Naismith College Player of the Year trophy.
The online auction, which runs through June 11, includes more than 1,350 premium lots across all major sports.
Gretzky, the greatest hockey player of all time, played his final NHL game at Madison Square Garden on April 18, 1999. At age 38, he scored his 2,857th and final career point while wearing the New York Rangers jersey, which is signed and dated by The Great One.
“We are incredibly honored to have the opportunity to offer this incredible piece of sports history to our customers,” said Michael Russek, director of operations at Grey Flannel. “Wayne Gretzky is an icon in the world of hockey and his final game-worn jersey represents a truly unique and special part of his legacy.”
The official Starter jersey, which has a minimum bid of $50,000, is in excellent condition and was featured in MSG’s “Defining Moments” Museum from 2013-19. The auction marks the first time it has been offered publicly and includes a Photo-Match Letter of Authenticity from MeiGray as well as a letter from John Rosasco, the Rangers long-time Senior Vice President of Public Relations.
Maravich’s College Player of the Year trophy is one of several items consigned by the family of “Pistol Pete.”
The Basketball Hall of Famer, one of the most exciting and dominant players in the history of the game, led the NCAA in scoring in 1969-70 with a remarkable 44.5 points per game for the LSU Tigers, the highest single-season scoring average in NCAA Division I men's basketball history. He averaged at least 43 points in each of his three seasons at LSU.
Known for his slick ball-handling and flashy style of play, Maravich played in the NBA for 10 years and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987.
The trophy, which is sourced by Maravich’s family, has an opening bid of $25,000.
Russek called the trophy “a rare and highly sought-after piece of basketball history that represents a pivotal moment in Maravich's career.”
“As one of the most talented and influential players of his time, Maravich's impact on the game cannot be overstated,” he said. “This award is a testament to his incredible skill and talent, and its historical significance makes it a truly remarkable find. We are excited to share this rare item with collectors and fans worldwide and we look forward to seeing the excitement it generates at auction."
