REA Summer Auction features Babe Ruth bat, Mantle cards, other rare, high-end collectibles

The summer auction at Robert Edward Auctions features one of the most rare sports cards in the hobby as well as other high-end items, including a 1922-24 Babe Ruth bat and a Mickey Mantle rookie card.

Robert Edward Auctions’ Summer Catalog Auction features nearly 3,000 items, highlighted by the newly discovered 1909-1911 T206 White Border Joe Doyle Hands Above Head error card.

The T206 Doyle card, graded SGC VG+ 3.5, is believed to be one of the rarest cards in the world, with no more than 10 copies known to exist. Another example sold at auction for just over $1 million in 2022. The starting bid is $250,000.

The auction will run through Sunday, Aug 13, with initial bids closing at 9 p.m. ET.

“While the quality of items that we have in our Summer event is incredible, this is also one of the most diverse auctions that we’ve ever hosted,” REA President Brian Dwyer said. “From the exceedingly rare T206 Joe Doyle error card to a number of unique championship items, game-used memorabilia and even rare Pokemon and Star Wars collectibles, we’re extremely excited about this auction because it caters to such a wide spectrum of the hobby.”

Other high-end cards in the auction include:

• A Babe Ruth game-used bat dating between 1922-24 and graded GU 10 by PSA/DNA.

• 1948-1949 Leaf #79 Jackie Robinson Rookie card (PSA NM-MT 8).

• 1951 Bowman #253 Mickey Mantle Rookie (PSA NM-MT 8).

• 1955 Topps #123 Sandy Koufax Rookie (PSA MINT 9)

All four cards have starting bids of $100,000.

• 1909-1911 T206 White Border Eddie Plank (PSA GOOD+ 2.5)

• 1933 R319 Goudey #92 Lou Gehrig (PSA NM-MT 8).

• 1933 R319 Goudey #144 Babe Ruth (SGC NM 7).

• 1952 Topps #261 Willie Mays (SGC NM/MT 8).

• 1965 Topps #477 Steve Carlton Rookie (PSA GEM MINT 10)

• 1980 Topps #482 Rickey Henderson Rookie (PSA GEM MINT 10)

• 1960 Topps #300 Hank Aaron (PSA MINT 9).

• 1970-1971 Topps Basketball Second Series unopened wax box (24 Packs, BBCE).

Among the unique memorabilia in the auction is original artwork from 25 of the 1953 Topps cards, including legends such as Yogi Berra, Red Schoendienst, Dom DiMaggio and Phil Rizzuto. The artwork is consigned by the grandson of Philip Shorin, the co-founder of Topps.

Many of the lots in the auction will be featured at REA’s booth (#327) at the National Sports Collectors Convention. REA also will be hosting Dick Perez, the long-time official artist of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and creator of the iconic Donruss Diamond Kings set, at its booth on Friday, July 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Perez will be available for photos and to sign items.
