Ray Guy Forced to Sell His Super Bowl Rings

Legendary punter Ray Guy’s Super Bowl XI, XV and XVIII rings will be auctioned off at Nate D. Sanders’ auction to be held Aug. 9.

Guy recently filed for bankruptcy and was ordered by a judge to sell the rings to raise money to pay off his debts.

Guy played for the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders from 1973-86. A seven-time Pro Bowler, he was an essential part of the Raiders dynasty that won three Super Bowls. In 1994, Guy was named to the NFL’s 75th anniversary team. In 2000, the Greater Augusta Sports Council began annually awarding the Ray Guy Award to the outstanding collegiate punter.

Guy earned his first Super Bowl ring in 1977 after the Oakland Raiders crushed the Minnesota Vikings 32-14. The gold ring features 28 diamonds set in a football-shaped pattern. In 1981, Guy was awarded his second Super Bowl ring featuring 35 diamonds after the Raiders defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl XV. Guy’s Super Bowl XVIII ring was issued in commemoration of the Los Angeles Raiders’ 38-9 victory over the Washington Redskins and displays 23 diamond-encrusted stones that are shaped into three footballs.

Guy’s rings will be showcased to the public at this week's National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago from Aug. 3-7.

The Super Bowl rings are estimated to sell between $75,000 and $90,000. The ring comes with a letter of authenticity from Ray Guy.
