1910 Punch Cigarros Pete Hill Approaches $65,000
A few weeks ago, I mentioned some of the high prices taking place in a Hake's auction involving Cuban baseball cards. Well, upon completion of the sale, Alex Winter at Hake's nudged me to have a look at the final selling prices – and I sure can see why.
Hake's was offering the Richard Merkin Collection which included numerous lots of SGC Authentic Cuban cards. Leading the pack was the 1910 Punch Cigarros P. (Pete) Hill card (without backing) that tallied a final bid of $64,936 inclusive of the buyer's premium.
That wasn't the only card that hit five figures. A 1909 Cabanas Bruce Petway, SGC 10, sold for $20,873. A 1910 Punch Cigarros Eddie Plank, SGC A, brought $13,662. Augustin Perpetti, SGC A, from the same set as Plank sold for $9,487.
And this isn't even including some of the Cuban team photos from the Merkin Collection which was included in the sale. Heading that group was Ciudad Trujillo 1937 team photo with some high-profile players such as Josh Gibson. The photo sold for $31,625.
Not too shabby coming from an auction house that isn't among the Top 5 in the hobby. For a complete list of sales from that auction, CLICK HERE.
