Bidders Aggressive in First Crack at Dreier Items: T206 Cobb Hits $67,500

Among the top items sold in in Legendary Auctions Day 1 session was a T206 Ty Cobb with Cobb back ($67,500) and a 1971-72 Wilt Chamberlain Lakers jersey ($42,500). A JFK golf bag hit $27,500.

The world got a preview of the types of items available in the Dreier Collection when Legendary Auctions, elected as the medium to offer the rare items to the world, offered eight lots in a fixed-price format. Those items totaled more than $3 million.

The rest of the collecting world got to participate this week, when a contingent from the Dreier Collection was offered in an auction format as part of Legendary Auctions' Sports & Americana sale. Part 1, which ended today (Mar. 7) included items from the Dreier Collection and totaled more than $1 million.

Leading the pack was a 1909-11 T206 White Border Ty Cobb with "Ty Cobb" Back - PSA PR 1 that brought $67,500. Second on the list was a 1971-72 Wilt Chamberlain Los Angeles Lakers game-used road jersey. From the team's championship season, the jersey went for $42,500. Speaking of Chamberlain, a pair of ticket stubs from his 100-point game in 1962 brought $10,000.

Game-used jerseys were a popular selling category in the sale, with a Don Drysdale 1960 Los Angeles Dodgers game-used home jersey - MEARS A9.5 – netting $23,000 and a Hank Aaron 1964 Milwaukee Braves game-used road jersey - MEARS A8.5 – selling for $17,000. A 1975 Johnny Bench gamer sold for $13,000 and a 1973-74 Jerry West Los Angeles Lakers signed, game-used road jersey topped out at $15,000.

Rare cards were also a high draw in the auction. aside from the aforementioned Cobb, other highlights included a 1888 N173 Old Judge Cabinet Harry Wright - SGC 60 EX 5 ($24,000), 1909-11 T206 White Border Clark Griffith, Batting, "Broadleaf 460" Back - PSA PR 1 ($10,000),1908-09 PC760 Rose Postcard Ty Cobb - SGC 20 FR 1.5 ($20,000), 1911 D304 Brunners Bread Ty Cobb - PSA VG-EX+ 4.5 ($27,500) and 1916 M101-5 Famous and Barr #151 Babe Ruth Rookie Card - SGC 10 PR 1 ($37,500).

A few other top highlights in the auction including Lou Boudreau's 1948 Cleveland Indians championship ring brought $24,000 and and his 1948 Indians jersey brought $14,000. A Jim Leyritz 1996 New York Yankees championship ring was acquired for $20,000 and an early 1960s President John F. Kennedy personally owned and used golf bag - gifted to his secretary brought $27,500.
