Vast array of T210s and Caramel cards headline Nov
Writing auction catalog listings is a challenging aspect of the calling, and I frequently applaud the efforts of the many auction veterans in coming up with fresh descriptions week in and week out. Bill Goodwin of Goodwin & Co. gets a nod in that regard with an entry on a single page of his Nov. 10 auction catalog that calls Charlie Comiskey a “tightwad” and describes the 1933 George C. Miller set as “creepy.” Good stuff.
Back to the basics. “I think what’s unique and sort of rare is the total of 500-plus different T210s (shown), offered in eight different lots by series,” Goodwin said. “As far as I know, I think it’s one of the largest offerings of them that I’ve ever seen.
The 465-lot auction also features a number of spectacular Babe Ruth items, including a 1933 Sport King Ruth in PSA 8 ($9,500 minimum bid, shown) and a 1920 “Headin’ Home” movie lobby card (also shown) that opens at $1,500, a 1919 W514 Joe Jackson in SGC 88 ($2,500) and the aforementioned 1887 Allen & Ginter Comiskey in SGC 84 ($1,900), plus a boatload of early tobacco, candy and gum cards and Goodwin’s usual emphasis on high-grade early Topps and Bowman baseball issues and pristine stars and low-population commons.
There are Old Judge Hall of Famer cards, two McCarthys, one with St. Louis and one with Philadelphia. And there’s a Delahanty and a Radbourn that are neat cards as well.
“There are more than 100 lots of Caramel cards,” said Goodwin, noting a lineup that includes: 1909-11 E90-1 American Caramels of Joe Jackson, Eddie Plank, Frank Baker and Eddie Collins; 1909 E95 Philadelphia Caramels of Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, Ty Cobb and Eddie Cicotte; a 1909 E91 American Caramel Eddie Collins in PSA 7; 1910 E93 Standard Caramels of Nap Lajoie and Eddie Plank; and dozens of 1921 and 1922 American Caramels (including several Ruths).
The postwar roster includes a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle ($2,500), a 1951 Bowman Whitey Ford rookie in PSA 8 ($1,500), high-grade 1948 Leaf and 1952 Berk Ross Joe DiMaggios, a 1948 Bowman Berra rookie, 1949 Bowman rookies of Satchel Paige and Jackie Robinson, a 1953 Topps Willie Mays in PSA 8, a 1953 Bowman Color Mickey Mantle in GAI 5 and a large grouping of pristine Topps Baseball cards from 1955-62.
There is also Goodwin’s traditional emphasis on prime unopened material, including packs from 1952 Bowman Baseball and Football, a 1955 Topps Baseball pack (shown above right) and 1957 Topps Baseball packs, a wax pack ($1,000) and a cello ($1,500, also shown) from the first standard-size Topps issue.
“The last two lots are pretty cool, an autographed Gehrig Wire photo and a Ruth photo with Ruppert in Yankee Stadium launching the 1939 World’s Fair ($2,500), and that came originally from the Barry Halper Collection,” Goodwin continued.
